Jandar Symbol

Jandar's original crest design.

Jandar is a Valkyrie General, the Archkyrie of Nastralund, and part of the Counsel of the Archkyrie. He is a close friend of the notable kyrie Thormun and Raelin as well as the summoner of Sgt. Drake Alexander, a key figure in Heroscape's story. During the opening of the conflict he was only allied with the forces of Ullar, but later he would send Thormun on a mission to forge an alliance with Vydar and Einar after a vision warned him of Utgar's intentions to use the wellsprings for universal conquest.[1]

History[]

Jandar beckons in the Heroscape Animated Commercial.

Early History[]

As a child, Jandar explored the tunnels beneath Soulrazor Canyon and found a potentially magical spring there, which he would later attempt to control after the Rise of the Valkyrie began. He was aware that the spirits of the dead rose and haunted this area.[2]

Prior to the Rise of the Valkyrie, Jandar governed as Archkyrie of Nastralund, and was a close friend to the Ekstrom royal family, including Ullar.[3] At some point he came into possession of the Katana of Thorian, among other enchanted weapons like the Spear and Shield of Gerda and the Sword of Guether. He used the Katana of Thorian to single-handedly hold off battalions of kyrie warriors assaulting the Willenshire Tombs, a burial site for kyrie heroes in Nastralund, and wielded it up to the day that Sgt. Drake would be summoned into Valhalla and gifted the sword.[4]

He would attend the Council of Archkyrie and be recognized as a Valkyrie alongside Thormun, Ullar, Vydar, Einar and Utgar.[5]

Rise of the Valkyrie[]

JandarComic

Jandar opens a Wellspring portal to take Sgt. Drake Alexander to safety.

When the newly fledged Valkyrie Utgar struck with a legion of Grut Orcs led by Taelord, Jandar took the kyrie Raelin under his wing, as her father had been killed by Taelord and her mother Gerda had died defending Jandar's forge in Caelios. He would train with her for a period of years until he deemed her ready to wield the Spear of Gerda.[6]

Early after becoming a Valkyrie, he summoned Finn, Thorgrim, and the Tarn Viking Warriors, followed by Sgt. Drake Alexander, all of whom were about to die in their respective times. He informed them that he is assembling a team from across time and space to keep Valhalla from being torn apart by conflict. He described the discovery of the Wellsprings, and the wondrous powers held within their waters, along with the division those powers have brought. Sgt. Drake and the Vikings agreed to join his cause.[7]

He told Sgt. Drake Alexander that he planned to secure the Wellsprings for everyone to share, and opposed Utgar who wanted to control them only for his own gain, and gifted him with the Katana of Thorian. He also gifted Finn the Viking Champion with the Sword of Guether, and his brother Thorgrim with the Shield of Gerda, items which the young viking Hal was jealous about. Sgt. Drake saw Jandar as a friend rather than as a master.[8][9]

Jandar met with the historian Thormun, who volunteered to become a scout for Jandar's Northern Army. At the time Nastralund was heavily under siege by Utgar's forces.[10]

A short time later, flying over the Sigling Sea with Concan, Kelda and Tyrian, he would ask Thormun to set out on a mission to visit Ullar of Ekstrom, Vydar of Anund and Einar of Lindesfarme in order to forge an Alliance against Utgar, for fear that if Utgar won the war, he would use the power of the wellsprings to invade all worlds.[11]

Thormun's mission to unite Jandar, Ullar, Vydar and Einar in the Alliance was successful. Einar provided the Looking Glasses of Vaelentela, artifacts that would allow the generals to speak with each other over the long distances between their Regions, to aid the new Alliance.[12]

Age of Annihilation[]

Later, in the Age of Annihilation, Jandar was no closer to keeping his promise to send his summoned peoples home.[13] Nevertheless, when he summoned a despondent Knight Primus Adelbern to his keep and the ursine warrior's spirit seemed broken, Sgt. Drake Alexander was able to convince Adelbern that Jandar's promise was worth fighting for.[14]

Ten years after the last High Counsel of the Archkyrie during which he had been granted the title of Valkyrie, a peace summit was held in central Aunstrom to bring an end to the years of war. He was represented by the Ursine Knight Irene and her Frostclaw Paladins.[15] Unfortunately, the summit collapsed due to outside interference and a string of poisoned Wellsprings. Although these were attributed to the rising Valkyrie Revna, it was secretly a group of defector pirates that had sabotaged the summit and poisoned the springs.[16]

After the events of the peace summit, Jandar locked down the borders of Nastralund, deploying knights like the Ordo Borealis to ensure no pirate trespassers made their way inland.[17] He also issued orders for his followers to retreat entirely out of regions he did not control, redeploying in Nastralund and Thaelenk.[18]

Unbeknownst to Jandar, the crew of the Voidwing, led by Captain Fia Bonny and including Killian Vane III, Dorim and a disguised Shiori, would attempt to cross a frostbitten fjord from Laur into Nastralund to poison one of his Wellsprings. However, their crossing was rebutted by a treasonous group of Utgar's followers led by Loviatäk the Kyrie Warrior, who wished to claim the poison for her own ends.[19]

Additional Info[]

The Sentinels of Jandar form the body of his military, and the Dzu-Teh, protectors of the Thaelenk Tundra, allow his troops safe passage.[20]

The color Jandar Blue in the Heroscape: Age of Annihilation paint set is named after him.[21]

In the Heroscape Mini-Movie, he explains far less to Sgt. Drake after he is summoned, and simply says "No time to explain, warrior! The battle of all time awaits!" In said webisode he is presumably voiced by Steve Blum, who also voices Mimring in the webisode.
